Timothy David Sweet, 79, was born on August 8, 1946, in Spencer, Iowa, to Homer Charles and Mary Jean Sweet. Tim passed away peacefully at home on December 11, 2025, in De Soto, Iowa.
The oldest of five children, Tim learned early how to take charge of any situation—something that served him well throughout his life. He handled the Navy, sales, fatherhood, and even cancer with strength and determination. Tim was a 1964 graduate of Centerville High School. That same year, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving honorably from August 1964 until his discharge in 1969. During his service, he was stationed aboard the USS Hoel (DDG-13).
Following his military service, Tim worked for many years at Haag in the Chicago area, where he and his wife raised their young family. He later joined Phoenix Textiles out of O’Fallon, Missouri, a company that eventually transferred him to De Soto, Iowa. Tim retired from Phoenix Textiles after 30 years of dedicated service and countless miles on the road.
On weekends, Tim indulged his passion for sports. After moving to Iowa, he became a USATF-certified official for field events, allowing him to travel throughout the region. His favorite events, however, were always local—ADM High School meets and the Drake Relays. A proud Bulldog, Tim’s dedication earned him a place on the Drake Relays Wall of Honor. After 26 years of officiating, he was among the first honored.
There is not enough space to fully tell Tim’s story. Anyone who ever met him could share at least one story that would leave you feeling better than before. Have a cup of coffee and toast Tim—he would appreciate it, find it unnecessary, but appreciate it all the same.
Tim is survived by his wife, LuAnn Grove; son Nathan (Kerry); daughter Christa (Tramell Lackland); siblings Richard (Karin), Michael (Diane), Mary Ann (Jorge) Ramirez, and Stanton (Cynthia) Sweet; grandchildren Aspen and Aidan Sweet; stepson Chris Grove; stepdaughter Laura Mzimba; and step-granddaughter Krista Hines. He is also survived by his dear friends Maurice Adair, Michael Hildebrand, and Lisa Eastman, who provided immeasurable support and care until the very end.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
The family will hold private services at a later date.
