Samantha Rae Oberg

Updated: Jun 10, 2021

A life filled with stories – lots of stories. Samantha Rae Oberg, born February 15, 1952, died on May 20, 2021. She was known to most as simply, Sam or Free Spirit Sam. She loved the sunshine and heat, live music and most anything outdoors. Many years of life were spent in Iowa, Montana, South Dakota, Texas and Arizona. Her travels took her to many places, a favorite was St. Lucia. Her final years were spent in Iowa, back to where she began life with her first husband Gary Nuckolls and started their family with daughters, Melissa and Candy and a white picket fence beginning. Although that marriage didn’t last, she ended life with a rekindled love for Gary. She had a few loves along the way, her soul mate being Leonard whose life was taken too soon. Her last loves were her diggy dogs Toto and Chalet. She liked to tell it like it was, no inhibitions, honest to a fault sometimes and knew no strangers. Sam disliked more than anything lying, thieving and cheating. Which she often told her grandkids along with many stories including her infamous story about stepping into a rattlesnake hive. Sam had so many stories and memories to tell she was often told she should write a book. Although life was filled with many challenges, no matter what she did or where she was at, she always made it fun. She could even make cleaning fun. Among Sam’s many likes were a night out dancing, lobster and crab legs, a love for Willie Nelson, old TV shows, reading, good looking men, her Arizona desert garden, a sweet tooth for snack cakes, and an ice cold beer. Not necessarily in that order. She was a master at cooking up the best macaroni and tomatoes and her pickled asparagus was delish.

Left to tell her many life stories and adventures are her two daughters Melissa (Eric) Stimple and Candy Nuckolls. Her favorite grandkids Safire Nuckolls, Krystal Moriset and Carter Stimple. Five adorable and much loved great grandkids Ashleigh, Christian, Keegan, Tatum and Seeley. Siblings that are sure to have their own Sam story - Ray Husmann, Glenn (Cindy) Husmann, Coleen (Bob) Husmann, Clifford (Jamie) Husmann, Faye (Delbert) Wilson, Todd Wilson, Troy (Cindy) Tomes, and Tim (Lisa) Tomes. And too many aunts and uncles to name. Sam was preceded in death by her mother Thelma (Gene) Tomes and father Paul Husmann and three siblings Paula Martinez, Donald Husmann and Cindy Hoyt.

Per her wishes, she was cremated and a party is to be held. A Celebration of Life will take place June 12, 2021, at the home of daughter, Melissa Stimple. Gathering from 2-6 PM, with a toast to Sam and sharing around 3 PM. BBQ dinner provided. Family and friends are invited to stop by and share a memory or two.
