Merle Don “Butch” Parker passed away at home on Saturday, May 2, 2026, surrounded by the family he loved so deeply.

Butch was born on November 17, 1943, to Roseanna and Merle Parker and grew up on the east side of Des Moines, Iowa. Those early years helped shape the hardworking, fun-loving man so many came to know and love.

In 1966, he married the love of his life, Sherry Ritchie, beginning a partnership that would span nearly 60 wonderful years. Together, they built a life centered around family, raising their two daughters, Michelle and Jennifer, who meant everything to him.

Butch spent his career working with both his hands and his heart. He began at Woodford Manufacturing, later joined his father in HVAC work, and eventually brought his talents to Des Moines University in maintenance. No matter where he worked, he took great pride in what he built and fixed—especially when he could put his remarkable woodworking skills to use.

If you knew Butch, you knew he rarely sat still for long. In his younger years, he had a bit of a daredevil streak—riding motorcycles in the snow, hang gliding off cliffs, water skiing with flair, and sharing stories of close calls with a grin. Those stories became part of his legend and will be cherished by his family for years to come.

In his later years, his greatest joy was being “Grandpa” and “Great-Grandpa.” He loved spending time with his grandchildren—pulling them in the wagon, playing with trains and slot cars, and being present for the small, everyday moments that meant so much.

Butch had a creative spirit and a deep love for building. Whether it was furniture, jewelry, or radio-controlled airplanes, he seemed able to make just about anything. He built a playhouse for his daughters when they were young and later helped construct two family homes with his father—lasting reminders of the life he created with his own hands.

He also loved the outdoors—camping, boating, and birdwatching—and never lost his appreciation for life’s simple pleasures. He was often seen in his cowboy hat, boots, or driving cap, usually with a loyal dog by his side.

More than anything, Butch will be remembered for who he was as a person: a devoted husband, a proud father, a fun-loving grandpa, and a kind, generous man who was always ready to lend a hand. He gave his time freely, loved deeply, and left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Sherry; his daughters, Michelle Poortinga (Bill) and Jennifer Leto (John); his grandchildren, Aaron Mattison, Nick Leto, Nick Mattison (Johanna), Aly Brodka (Cody), and Shae Poortinga; and his great-grandchildren, Marley and Noah Mattison, Lily and Ezra Mattison, and Tillie and Ty Brodka. He also leaves behind his sister-in-law, Linda Ritchie, beloved dog Penny, and cousin Diana Parker Thomas, along with many extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rose, and Merle Parker; his sister-in-law, Judy Ritchie McNerney; and many beloved dogs who were always part of his family.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the Hospice team—especially Olivia, Erin, and Lora—for their kindness and compassionate care during this difficult time.

A Celebration of Life open house will be held on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at Jennifer and John’s home located at 6277 NE 8th Ct, Des Moines, IA, 1:00-4:00pm. Please come to share memories with family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa or the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.
