Mary Lane Kimpston was born on November 14, 1962, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and departed life surrounded by her family on October 20, 2025, in Des Moines, Iowa.
She was married to the love of her life, Bruce, for over 39 years. They were college sweethearts, best friends, and soulmates who cherished traveling and enjoying life together. She deeply loved her sisters, Debbie and Kathy, and looked forward to talking with them daily, as well as spending dedicated "sister days” when phone calls weren't enough. She also had a strong bond with her "brothers," Steve Smith and John Finney, who became part of her life when her older sisters married. Mary loved Bruce’s brother, Craig and his wife, Jill. She loved how much Craig and Jill supported her children throughout their lives.
Her role as a wonderful mother was evident in how she showed up for all of Chris’ and Emily's athletic games, concerts, and other interests. Mary believed she gained two more children when her children got married, welcoming Kelsey and John.
Mary's joy for life was most evident in her role as the world's best "Grammy." She was always quick to buy, make, or give something special. Spending time with her grandchildren was a priority. She wanted her "Grammy days" to be filled with playing, good food, and fun activities. Lifelong memories were created through trips to the zoo, sewing custom clothes and costumes, and always carrying an extra bag filled with "grandkids' stuff." She had unconditional love for her grandchildren.
Mary was deeply dedicated to spreading joy throughout her life. She worked as a music educator for more than 39 years, including 37 in the West Des Moines Community Schools. Even in retirement, she continued to substitute teach and volunteered with elementary and preschool children, earning the affectionate nickname "Grammy K" from kids at her church.
She is survived by husband Bruce, children Christopher (Kelsey) Kimpston, Emily (John) Twillmann, grandchildren Joanna & Micah (Kimpston), and Mark & Emma (Twillmann). She is preceded in death by her mother and father, David and Mary Noble, and by her beloved in-laws, Judy and Alden Kimpston.
A visitation will be held at Lutheran Church of Hope (925 Jordan Creek Parkway, West Des Moines) on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at 10:00 AM, with a celebration of life service at 11:00 AM, followed by lunch in the Bridge at Hope.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial can be made to Chris Kimpston at Lutheran Church of Hope. He, as a member of the family, will allocate these to Mary's passions.
