Karen Kay Weilbrenner, 85, of Urbandale, Iowa, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Karen was born on February 20, 1940, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Alva and Lavonne (Croft) McConnell. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Donald Weilbrenner, and aunts and uncles. She is survived by her son, Brent Weilbrenner (Jennifer Boes) of Grimes, IA; her grandchildren, Gabriel Weilbrenner (Melanie McElroy) of Charles City, IA and Hayden Weilbrenner of West Des Moines, IA; and her great-grandchildren, Ivy Weilbrenner and Ayden Weilbrenner. She is also survived by her sister, Joy (McConnell) Stewart of Altoona, and brother-in-law, Gene Stewart, of Altoona; nephews, Randy Stewart (Jan Stewart) of Urbandale and Mark Stewart (Julie Stewart) of Altoona; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
Karen devoted 35 years of her life to serving as a nurse at the VA Hospital in Des Moines, where her compassion, dedication, and professionalism touched countless lives. Caring for veterans and their families was a calling she held close to her heart.
Beyond her work, Karen was a fun-loving humorist who cherished life’s simple joys. She enjoyed playing the slot machines, watching her favorite TV shows, listening to country music, and most of all, spending time with her beloved family. She had a deep love for animals, especially dogs, and always carried a soft spot in her heart for them. Her family will forever cherish the memories and love she expressed for her Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. In her final days, Karen was surrounded by love and the family is deeply thankful for the time they shared with her. She was comforted by her Hospice nurses and the caring team of nurses and staff at Bishop Drumm Nursing Home in Johnston, IA. She was able to say goodbye to her son, grandchildren and great children, and her cherished sister, Joy, before her passing.
Karen will be remembered for her humor, her warmth, and the love she gave so freely. She will be greatly missed and forever treasured by her family and friends.
Memorials may be directed to the family for causes dear to Karen's heart. A celebration of life will be held in the near future.
