Judy Kathleen McVey, 77, of Chariton, Iowa, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2025, at the Kavanaugh Hospice House surrounded by her family and loved ones. Judy was born on June 12, 1948, in Lucas County. Judy was the cherished daughter of Clyde Earl and Hazel Kathleen McVey. Judy’s life was a testament to the love she gave and received throughout her life.
Growing up on a farm outside of Chariton, Judy's life was rooted in the values of hard work and family. After graduating from Cambria-Corydon Community School, Corydon, Iowa, in 1966, she moved to Cedar Rapids to live with her best friend. Although she had originally planned to be a nurse, her practical nature and sharp mind led her to pursue a degree in business and accounting from Kirkwood College. This decision launched a successful 30-year career at Mills Work, where she was the go-to person for all business and accounting needs.
Judy was a woman of many passions. She was a die-hard Iowa Hawkeyes fan, and her 20 years working in the sports ticket office at the University of Iowa was a dream come true. To her, it wasn't work; it was a front-row seat to the teams she loved. Judy's life was full of connections. She loved playing cards, dominoes, and bowling with a wide circle of friends and was known as a "very busy lady" who was loved by everyone she met. She also enjoyed a good Margarita and the thrill of a casino visit or a big win in bingo. She was especially proud of her nails, which were always perfectly polished and taken care of, she loved to hear people compliment them.
Judy’s memory lives on through her devoted family and a Hawkeye victory. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Hazel McVey. Fiancé, Mark, who was tragically killed in a trucking accident. Brothers: Lyle, Rex, Jerry, and Tom; sisters Shirley McVey and JoAnn Williams; two nephews, Robert Williams and Rick McVey, and great-niece, Susan McVey. Judy is survived by several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life honoring Judy will be held at 1pm on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at Brooks Funeral Care (2135 SW 9th St Des Moines, Iowa). Following the celebration of life, a luncheon will be held at Grandwood (1501 Mulberry St. Granger, Iowa). All friends and family are welcome to attend and share fond memories of Judy.
