Iva Verlea "Connie" Goddard

Iva Verlea “Connie” Goddard 97, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 3rd at

The Shores in Pleasant Hill, Iowa. Connie was born January 31, 1925 in Barnard, Missouri to David & Mary King.


Connie excelled in softball through high school and was able to continue her love of the game by playing on industrial teams in St Joseph, MO. and Des Moines, IA. Retiring from the game in 1955 lead to her induction into the Des Moines Softball Hall of Fame in 1986.


Connie furthered her education at Drake University where she earned an Accounting Degree.

Connie married A.R. (Bud) Goddard in 1967. Together they ran Goddard Floor Covering until retiring in 1980. The pair became winter Texans until Bud’s death in January 1996. Later, she married Johnny Johnson in June 1999 until his death in December 2000.


Connie enjoyed dancing, fishing, water skiing, traveling, sports, and reading. In 2003 Texas became her home state. During the summer, traveling by motor she would visit her family and friends in Virginia, Iowa, and Missouri.


Connie is survived by her two sisters, Velda Deane Alkire and Ima Jean Angold.

A nephew, who was more like her son, Dale (Sheryl) Goddard, step-son Ronald Goddard, and daughter-in-law Dixie Meadows. Also surviving are her loving grandchildren, Angela Leeper, Amy (Richard) Wolver, Juli (Kevin) Duff, Jason Goddard, Jami (Leslie) Womack. She has 6 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.


She was proceeded in death by her parents, her brother Kenneth King, husband A.R (Bud) Goddard, second husband Johnny Johnson, step-daughter Anna Lee Godard, grandson Ryan Goddard, and nephew Kenneth Dean Sipes.


The family is planning a graveside service that will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens 7601 Fleur Dr., Des Moines, Iowa on Thursday, April, 21, 2022 at 2:00PM.


Her Iowa family extends their gratitude to the staff at The Shores in Pleasant Hill, Iowa, and Mercy Hospice.
