Gloria Marie Brewer

Gloria Marie Brewer, 75, passed away September 10, 2022 at Methodist Hospital after a short battle with lung cancer. Gloria was born May 26, 1947 to her parents Glenn Hamilton and Muriel Minerva Everson in Viroqua, Wisconsin. She graduated from Viroqua High School and attended Wisconsin State in LaCrosse and later 2 years of secretary training in Winona.

Gloria was passionate about her work at the Veterans Administration (VA) Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, where she worked for over 40 years as a purchasing agent. When she wasn’t working at the VA, Gloria enjoyed playing bridge, sail boating, and later in life, road tripping with her husband Jay in their RV. After retiring from the VA, she spent her days volunteering through several organizations including Methodist West Hospital and Grimes Volunteer Support Services and working at the Johnston Public Library. She was an avid reader and loved putting together jig saw puzzles. She was a kind and caring soul and was known to always put others first. What made her heart full was being able to spend time with and share her love with her children and grandchildren. Family was very important to Gloria, and she cherished the time spent with all of them.

Left to cherish Gloria’s memory are her husband of 34 years, Jay Brewer, and their combined children Heather Gibson (Ron), Derek Brewer (Valerie), Angela Bogle (Chris Riekens), and Michael Bogle. She has 10 wonderful grandchildren, Shane Bayliff, Kallie Pentico (Joshua), Sophia Schonert (Adam), Baize Gibson, Emery Gibson, Keilah Brewer, Linnea Brewer, Jillian Riekens, Beau Riekens, Kaitlyn Riekens and 1 great-granddaughter Juniper Pentico and 1 great-grandchild on the way. She also has two surviving brothers Donald Everson and Daniel Everson (Waneeta) and nephews Jonah Everson (Kate) and Barrett Everson (Beth). In addition to her human family, Gloria will be missed by her beloved cat Lulu. She is preceded in death by her parents.

Gloria was a member of the St. Peter Lutheran Church in Grimes. There will be a memorial service to honor her life on Thursday, September 29th at 5:00pm with a memorial gathering beforehand from 4:00-5:00pm at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 1001 S James St, Grimes, IA 50111.

In lieu of flowers, Gloria’s family asks that you instead donate to the Johnston Public Library Foundation (foundation.johnstonlibrary.com) in honor of Gloria’s love of reading and the enjoyment she had working there the last 6 years of her life.
