Warren "Bill" Westlund

Warren “Bill” Westlund

January 13, 1940 – August 18, 2022

Survivors include his beloved wife, Breta Westlund, daughter Lynne Westlund, son Warren (Janette) Westlund, granddaughter Carissa Young, great grandson Ezekiel Carroll, brother Robert (Nancy) Westlund and sister Linda Westlund. He also enjoyed spending time with his grand dog, Ozark.

Bill and Breta married December 17, 1960, recently celebrating their 61st wedding anniversary.

Bill served his country in the Army as a Military Policeman in Canal Zone, Panama; and was honorably discharged in 1969. He graduated from Drake University with a BS in Business Administration; and spent 35 years with Allstate Insurance, retiring in May of 2000.

Bill was always an advocate for those in need. An ardent supporter of Variety Club of Iowa, Bill raised millions of dollars over the years for the children of Iowa. He also co-founded Rainbow Center (now Passageway); and spent six years on their Board.

After retirement, Bill and Breta traveled the world together; from climbing the Great Wall of China, to visiting King Tut’s tomb and riding camels past the pyramids at sunset. They also enjoyed travels to the Great Barrier Reef and Scotland’s St. Andrews among many other locales. They loved spending summers at the family cabin in Round Lake, Minnesota. No matter how far or long they traveled, it was always wonderful to come home to their beloved Iowa, their children, extended family, and friends.

Bill had a special place in his heart for his friends at the Urbandale Country Club, especially his golfing and pitch game buddies. He was a lifelong golfer who was proud to “golf his age” for years. He was also a proud member of the “Boys Improvement Club”.

Donations may be made in Bill’s name to the Variety Club of Iowa, Passageway, MercyOne Des Moines Foundation, or any charitable organization of your choosing.

Private memorial and interment at Iowa Veterans Cemetery.
