Tom Oler

Updated: Aug 8, 2022

Tom Oler, passed away unexpectedly on August3, 2022. Tom grew up in Des Moines in the family home at 31st & Kingman. He attended Elmwood Elementary, Callanan Jr High, and Roosevelt High. Tom was a charming, generous and happy person, although he struggled with mental health issues over the years. Tom was fondly known as the “Deuce” to his family because of his initials - T.W.O. It was a joy to him when his granddaughter would call him TWO Pops.

Tom had several jobs over his life - including working for Beggars Banquet, That Deli (Iowa City), Ace Lines, and Drake Diner. Unfortunately, his health had prevented him from working for the past several years. Tom loved to follow Democratic politics in his later years. He would watch any news or political show he could tune in. He liked to say he'd watch the opposing views so he could keep his friends close and his opponents closer. He loved to talk politics with friends and family. His constant companion was his kitty Rebach whose name came from Tom's previous cat Bach. Tom loved to tell stories of Rebach riding in the car and going with him to the bank or store. Tom loved to send pictures and regale people with the stories of Reback begging to go for a ride with him. In fact, Tom was often going out for a drive - just to take Rebach for a ride.

Tom was born in Des Moines, Iowa to Mary Grace Oler and Donald Wayne Oler. He was preceded in death by his mother and father.

Tom is survived by his son, Travis Oler and wife, Kathleen Serino and granddaughter, Trudi. His brother, Hugh Oler and wife, Sue Oler. His brother, John Oler and wife, Ellen Carbarnes. He had many nieces and nephews. And of course, by his kitty, Rebach, who was adopted by his son. The family has no plans for services at this time but may have at a later date.
