Thelma Boyle

Thelma Mae Boyle, 75, of Grimes Iowa passed away on Sunday, December 11, 2022 at home from lung cancer.

She was born on April 29, 1947 in Pipestone Minnesota, the fourth child to Albert and Ellen (Halbersma) Hubers.

After graduating from high school in Pipestone, Thelma moved to Canby Minnesota to study Architectural Drafting at Canby’s vocational and technical institute (now part of Minnesota West Community and Technical College).

She married Harland Gene Paulsen at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Canby on April 29, 1967, he preceded her in death on April 14, 1976. Together they had two daughters, Michelle Riley and Anna Paulsen.

On October 4, 1987 (seven years after they met), Thelma married Roland William “Bill” Boyle II in Guthrie Center Iowa, where they owned and operated the Foodland grocery store. In 1990 they opened Mr. Bill’s Marketplace, a grocery store, in Grimes Iowa (now a True Value).

In the fall of 2002 they retired and moved to Naples Florida to take care of Bill’s mother Alice. After Alice passed they moved to Port Charlotte Florida. There they enjoyed many visits from vacationing family members when they themselves were not traveling. Bill passed away on November 5, 2020 at their home in Port Charlotte.

Thelma moved back to Iowa to be near her daughters and closer to her siblings and to get away from Florida's humidity. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crosswords and sudoku. She also enjoyed playing Sequence and Skip Bo (house rules) with family and friends.

Those left to cherish her memory include; her daughters, a son-in-law, her 7 remaining siblings and their families, Harland’s family including a sister-in-law and nephews, Bill’s family including his many grandchildren, and friends who were like family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, beloved husbands, 3 adult siblings (from cancer), a father-in-law, two mother-in-laws, and two brother-in-laws and other loved ones.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her name to the cancer charity of your choice; and please talk to your doctor about all available cancer screening.

There will be a celebration of life in April 2023 in Canby Minnesota where she will be inurned next to Harland. Details to be announced later.
