Schalie Jean Fischer

Schalie Jean Fischer, age 57, of Johnston, Iowa, the daughter of Charles Lewis Fischer and Ruby Jean Hill, was born on November 14, 1964, in Apopka Florida. She died at Bishop Drumm retirement home in Johnston, Iowa on Saturday December 25, 2021.

Schalie’s family moved to Shafter California in 1964, to work in the cotton fields. Schalie grew up on the family farm of her grandparents, Eugene and Rella Hill. She became an avid animal lover and often rode her favorite horse Goldie around the farm and fields. Schalie attended high school and community college in Bakersfield, CA where her mother and stepfather chose to settle down.

Schalie never married, instead she moved to Texas in 1993 to help her sister raise her niece Tasha, and nephew Matthew. She became a second mother to them and doted on them throughout their younger years. She loved to dress them up for Halloween, often spending hours putting makeup on them to create characters like the great pumpkin for Tasha, and fighter pilot Matt. As Schalie got older she began watching the food network and recreating the recipes at home. Some of her niece’s and nephew’s favorites were: moco-loco, macaroni salad, taco salad, Toad in a hole, and barbecue chicken. Schalie also served as the historian for her family. She spent endless hours researching and documenting the Hill family tree.

Schalie was an avid Disney fan and collected figurines, movies, and other souvenirs throughout her life. She was also an avid Disney movie watcher, often watching them over and over to the point she could quote lines and sing the songs word for word.

Although life took her on a different path, she never left her love for animals behind and had several rescue animals that she adopted during her lifetime. She adopted many cats, giving each one a unique name that included: Meep, Mitzie, Freeway, Dumpster, Mama, Inkspot, Mikey, Yen and Yang.

Preceding her in death were her parents: uncle, Ronald in 2005, aunt, Judy in 2015, and stepbrother, Charles Dean in 2018.

Survivors include her sister, Karen Rohrer of Leander, Texas, Nephew Matthew Rohrer and wife of Leander, Texas, and Niece Tasha Rohrer and spouse Isaac, of Urbandale, Iowa.
