Robert Gene Weiser, 74, of Altoona, passed away peacefully at the VA surrounded by family. Robert grew up in Des Moines before moving to Altoona where he attended Southeast Polk graduating in 1966. In 1969, Robert was drafted into the US Army as a heavy vehicle mechanic and was sent to Vietnam. Robert raced go-karts when his children were younger as well as coaching his children in bowling. He loved watching NASCAR and his favorite driver was #3 Dale Earnhardt. Robert had many jobs over the years ultimately retiring as property clerk from the Polk County Sheriff's Office in 2010. After retiring, Robert spent lots of time going to car shows where he loved to show off his hugger orange '69 Camaro and making new friends. He also helped organize the very first car show at the VA and helped his daughter organize some car shows for the daycare she used to work at.
Robert was preceded in death by his father, John Vernon, his mother, Betty Jane and his older brothers, John and Keith. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Georgina, his daughter, Shawna, son, Corey, daughter-in-law Dusty and granddaughter, Jayde. He also leaves behind his beloved dog, Marko and many nieces and nephews.
Robert will be inurned at the Veteran's Cemetery in Van Meter at 2:00pm on September 8th. We will be holding a Celebration of Life on September 9th (his birthday) at Cottonwood Recreation area at Saylorville.
