Nola Hewus

Nola M. Hewus passed away on Tuesday, February 9, 2021. She was born on July 25, 1940, to Chester and Mildred (Schultz) Hertz in Kankakee, Illinois. Nola received her Bachelors of Music Education from Murray State College. She began her teaching career in southern Ohio where she met and married Gerald J (Jerry) Hewus in 1964.


Nola left teaching to begin their family and they moved to northwest Indiana; there she continued to support her growing family as a homemaker. In 1975, she and Jerry relocated their family to Des Moines, IA, and stayed. Her love for music followed her, and she became involved in many community organizations including the Des Moines Community Orchestra, “Everyone Sings the Messiah”, the Drake Community Choir. She taught piano lessons privately and was always found at the piano during church services.


Nola is survived by her children, Laura (Hewus) Young and Kevin Hewus; her grandchildren, Daniel and Riley; sisters, Winona (Hoogstraat), of Clifton, IL, and Eileen (Rauglas), of Elmhurst, IL; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry, of 55 years: her parents; brothers Quentin, of Hartville, MO, and Dallas, of Crystal Lake, IL; and sisters Jeannine (Dominic-McNemee), of Bloomington, IL, and Anitra (Spangler), of Manteno, IL.


Services will be held on Sunday, February 14, 2021 at 6:00 pm at Fellowship Community Church, 225 North Ave, Norwalk, IA. The family will greet friends from 4:00-6:00 pm prior to the service.
