Mr. William Archibald Stewart III (“Priest”)

Updated: Aug 7

April 21, 1947 – July 30, 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce the homegoing of Mr. William Archibald Stewart III, lovingly known as "Priest," who departed this life on July 30, 2025, at the age of 78, following a brief stay at the VA Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.

William was born on April 21, 1947, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, IA, to the late William A. Stewart II and Norvillene Mash Stewart. He graduated from Des Moines Technical High School before being drafted into the United States Army, where he proudly served his country from May 31, 1966, to August 14, 1968.

Upon returning home, William dedicated many years of service to his community through his work at 801 Grand, the Des Moines Public School System, and the Des Moines Metropolitan Transit Authority (M.T.A.). After retirement, he embraced life fully — spending his time coloring, enjoying classic westerns, following politics, and, above all, cherishing moments with his beloved family and friends.

After a 25-year friendship, William married the love of his life, Doris Smith, on October 22, 2024 — a union that was a beautiful testament to enduring love.

William was preceded in death by his parents, his son Troy, brothers George, Robert, and Charles, and his sister Robyn.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife Doris, his children Tony, Ali, Orlando, and Andrea; stepdaughters Yolanda and Tamoka Smith; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his loving sisters Patricia, Georgann, Bobbie, Norvillene, and loving brother Winfred; along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and many cherished friends.

William — your warmth, humor, and unwavering love will be deeply missed. You will remain in our hearts always and forever.

The Homegoing for Mr. William A. Stewart III will be held at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, Iowa on Tuesday, August 12 at 1:45 p.m. with Military Honors.

I Have A Place In Heaven

Please don’t sing sad songs for me,Forget your grief and fears,For I am in a perfect placeAway from pain and tears.

It’s far away from hungerAnd hurt and want and pride,I have a place in HeavenWith the Master at my side.

My life on earth was very good,As earthly life can go,But Paradise is so much moreThan anyone can know.

My heart is filled with happinessAnd sweet rejoicing, too.To walk with God is perfect peace,A joy forever new.

Your Loving Wife….Doris
