Merrily Ann Townsend died peacefully on November 21, 2024, at 84 years old. She was born April 30, 1940, in Wapello County, Iowa; daughter of Mabel Harsch and Franklin Barnes. She married Raymond Vance on May 10, 1959, with whom she had four children (Craig, Stacy, Mark, Michelle). Following Raymond’s passing in 1988, she was blessed with a second marriage to Donald Townsend in May 1996 until his passing in 2014.
Merrily worked for the Iowa Driver’s License where she was examiner, including working with semi-drivers for many years.
Merrily liked traveling, having proudly visited all 50 states. She had many hobbies, including reading, going on walks, playing cards, and especially mahjong). She really enjoyed talking – whether fiercely debating politics, keeping up with her extended family, or gossiping with friends. She was devoted to her grandkids, developing deep relationships and supporting each of their individual interests.
Merrily was an active member of Blakesburg Methodist Church and volunteered at many community organizations.
Merrily is survived by her children: Mark (Teresa) Vance of Altoona and Stacy Moore (Bobby) of Moravia; stepchildren, Teri Townsend of Atlanta, GA; Roger (Sheila) Townsend of Clive, and Gary (Jennifer) Townsend of Des Moines; along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by lifelong friends Margaret and Helen.
She is preceded in death by her husbands: Raymond Vance and Donald Townsend and children: Craig Vance and Michelle Frazier and son-in-law Russell Moore.
Services will be held at Blakesburg Methodist Church on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at 11am.
