Melissa K. Hamma, age 56, of Adel, passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2025. Her partner and caregiver Bill was at her side. She is the beloved partner to William (Bill) Lane of Des Moines. She is also survived by her parents, James, and Mary Ann Hamma of Johnston, also survived by her sister, Barbara Roberts (Steve), her nieces, Nicole of Urbandale, Lauren of Mt. Vernon and her nephew, Chris Roberts (Kealey) of Davenport.

Melissa was born on January 17, 1969, at Fort Hood, Killeen, Texas. She was adopted at age 3 by James and Mary Ann. Melissa was delighted to have a family and love, quickly becoming a typical “little sister” to their daughter Barbara.

Melissa lived a life filled with tremendous passion and service towards others. She developed a strong work ethic at an early age and was a natural leader. Melissa graduated from Urbandale High School in 1987. In her senior year she was awarded the Les Hamilton Award for Excellence in Writing. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Iowa State University in 1991. Melissa attended Drake University Law School, receiving her J.D. degree in 1997. She was admitted to the Iowa Bar the same year. The law profession became her life’s work, she practiced until 2016, retiring due to multiple physical health issues. Her accomplishments were admirable and many. Melissa worked and volunteered throughout high school, college, and law school. Her kindness, confidence and professionalism inspired many along the way during her life and career.

In retirement Melissa raised her beloved Pug, Gabby. She enjoyed collecting music and 80’s videos. Melissa loved to watch her partner Bill cook all their favorite dishes. Often joking that he will make someone a pretty good wife someday. Bill was amused at the mere suggestion. She was cared for by him at their home until 2022. When her care became 24/7, Melissa moved to Adel Acres in Adel. She brought joy to the residents and occasional challenges to the staff. Melissa received much love in the times when Bill was not able to be present.

Bill would like to thank the Adel Acres staff for their commitment to her care, comfort, and happiness. Additional thanks are expressed to Unity Point Hospital, doctors, nurses, and staff who performed admirably throughout Melissa’s many hospitalizations, rehabilitation, and appointments. Mid-Iowa Hospice also assisted Melissa in her final months, providing additional services, companionship, and comfort until her passing.

While our hearts mourn the loss, we take comfort knowing she is no longer suffering. Melissa was a fighter and a survivor, never feeling sorry for herself. She never quit.

Melissa’s Memorial Mass will take place Thursday June 19th, 2025, 10:30 A.M.

St. John's Catholic Church, 24043 302nd Pl. Adel, IA
