Maxine Lorraine Greek

Maxine Lorraine Greek, 91, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at home in Des Moines, Iowa surrounded by her family.


Maxine was born to Hazel Fransisco Miller and Floyd Hampton Crawford in Byron, Wisconsin on October 3, 1932. She grew up alongside her sister, Carryole Crawford, on their family cranberry marsh. In her early life, Maxine developed a love for horses and a strong work ethic that followed her throughout her life. Following graduation from high school, Maxine pursued her degree in Nursing at the University of Tennessee Memphis. She met William J. Greek at the University of Tennessee, and they married in December 1953. Maxine and William welcomed their daughters Cathy in 1953, followed by Becky in 1958.


Maxine dedicated over 40 years to the field of nursing, beginning in pediatric nursing. Later in her career, she stepped in to administrative roles including Chief Nursing Officer at Humana in Kissimmee, Florida, and Chief Nursing Officer at Humana in College Station, Texas. Maxine finished her career as the Volunteer Manager at Mercy Hospice in Des Moines, Iowa. She enjoyed caring for her family, quilting, learning, and teaching her children and grandchildren. Her patience, fairness, quiet strength, and unconditional support were inspirational to her family and all who knew her. 


Maxine will be missed by her daughters, Cathy Yokley and Becky Ubben (Dale Ubben); her grandchildren, Jessica Brand (Chad Brand), Rebekah Huston, Jeremy Edmondson (Cara Edmondson), and Amy Edmondson (Tony Scaglione); and her great-grandchildren, Elliot Huston, Elijah Huston, Gia Edmondson, Louise Edmondson, and James Edmondson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the University of Tennessee Foundation to support a Nursing scholarship in Maxine’s name.
