María was a woman of deep faith, love, and devotion to her family.
She was born in Victoria, Caldas, Colombia, on November 4, 1950, the youngest of seven siblings. María was called home to the Lord on September 13, 2026, in Ankeny, Iowa, surrounded by the love of her family.
At the age of 17, María left her hometown and moved to the city of Manizales, where she earned her nursing degree. Years later, she settled in Bogotá, where she met Carlos Julio Rodríguez Muñoz, the father of her three daughters.
For thirty-two years, María dedicated her professional life to nursing at the Materno Infantil and Misericordia hospitals, faithfully caring for others with compassion and devotion.
In 2004, María decided to pursue new horizons and moved to Barcelona, Spain, where she lived for nine years. In 2013, she returned to Colombia because of a health concern and was diagnosed with cirrhosis. With her strength and fighting spirit, María overcame the illness.
After recovering, she decided to begin another adventure and eventually made her way to the United States. In 2022, following the pandemic, María arrived in the United States, where she later met Gerard Edward “Jerry” Getman, who would become the love of her life. Meeting Jerry awakened a new dream in María—to embrace their love fully and enjoy many wonderful years together.
As Jerry says, “God smiled upon us the day we met. It was a miracle to find love so late in life.”
María loved one hundred percent—with complete devotion, commitment, and an “all-inclusive” kind of love. Last year, on her birthday, María underwent gallbladder surgery. Just days later, doctors discovered that she had cancer. The news was devastating, especially because María had found the love of her life and had rediscovered within herself a renewed desire to live, to love, and to share many more years with Jerry.
But María did not give up. She fought with courage, strength, and determination that had always defined her. She faced every moment of her illness with tremendous resolve and fought until the very end, holding tightly to life, love, and her family.
María was a fighter—brave, enthusiastic, joyful, and playfully spirited. She was the pillar of her family. She instilled strong values and principles in her daughters, raising them to be women devoted to family, faith, and kindness.
Those who had the blessing of knowing María will always remember her kindness, generosity, and the beautiful smile that brightened every gathering. Her joy, her strength, and the special way she gave herself so completely to those she loved left a deep and lasting impression on everyone whose life she touched.
María lived with faith, loved with all her heart, and fought until the very end. Her love, her teachings, her joy, and her faith will remain forever in the hearts of her daughters, Jerry, her family, and all those who had the privilege of sharing in her life.
María leaves to cherish her memory her beloved husband, Gerard Edward “Jerry” Getman; her daughters, Martha, Claudia, and Adriana; her grandchildren, Kevin, Juan, Tatiana, Samuel, and Alesandro; her great-grandson, Valentino; as well as many other family members and loved ones.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Carmen and Felix, and her brothers, Gabriel, Jacobo, and Evelio.
María’s family invites relatives and friends to join them for a Celebration of Life at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at Iglesia Poder, Vida y Gracia, 2440 Capitol Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa.
