Larry Douglas Smith (79) died peacefully at home on August 6, 2021, in Ames, Iowa. Larry was born on December 12, 1941, in Odessa, Missouri to Helen Beatrice (Wilcoxen) and Estel Green Smith. He graduated from Odessa High School in 1959, and Central Missouri State University, with a BS in Education (1964) and an MS in School Administration (1969).
Larry retired from the Denver Public School District after 32 years of service, impacting students as both a PE teacher and Assistant Principal. He was very athletic; enjoyed skiing, running, biking, coaching little league teams, and working for summer day camps and winter ski clubs.
In 2006, Larry gave up the beauty of the Colorado mountains, moving to Ames to spend more time with his daughter Kristin and her young family whom he adored. He is survived by his daughter, her husband Kevin Hinders, and their daughters, Casey, and Jordan. Also left to cherish his memory are his dear sisters, Marlyn Gay (Boulder, Colorado) and Janis (Robert) Slusher (Odessa, Missouri). He loved his nieces and nephews, who have many stories of fun times with Uncle Larry.
Larry was preceded in death by two brothers, Lester and Donald who died before he was born, his parents, Estel and Helen, his beloved big brother David, sister-in-law Rosalie, and brother-in-law Bernie.
