Larry Dale Collins, 78, of Dallas Center, IA, passed at home on December 12, 2023. He was born in Des Moines, IA on November 16,1945 to John C. and Ermafern Stine Collins. A lifelong resident of Dallas Center, he graduated from the local high school in 1964 before enlisting for a two-year stint in the Army as an SP4 artillery surveyor. Upon his return home, he worked on the family farm until he eventually went to work for Hy-Line International where he worked until his retirement.
Larry has always enjoyed spending his time outdoors. When he was younger, that included checking out fast cars and motorcycles, riding horses, fishing, hunting and golfing. As he grew older, his attention shifted to raising Welsh ponies and mules which he used to pull his wagon on trail rides with the Oxbow Company Trail Club. It also led to his post-retirement job of mowing for the county.
On October 19, 1968, he married Wendy Erickson. They remained married throughout his life, celebrating 55 years in the months before he passed. They had two children and four grandchildren. In a reflection of the love and loyalty she learned from her father, his daughter Susan aided in his care during his final months.
Larry will be forever loved and missed.
He is survived by his wife Wendy Erickson Collins; his children Susan Collins and Ira (Kathy) Collins; his grandchildren AJ & Elizabeth Huber and Braden & Colton Collins. He is also survived by his brother Gerald (Fonda) Collins and his family: Kip (Gloria) Stadtlander, Kim (Gary) Kloster, John (Jen) Collins and Darian (Meg) Collins as well as several other nephews, nieces and great nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents.
