Kevin Charles Mercer of Des Moines, Iowa died unexpectedly at home on April 18, 2026.
Kevin was born February 20, 1991, and he had a fire in him that burned bright from the very beginning. He was a passionate person all his life and he could inspire the same passion in those around him—friends, family, or a person he just met.
Kevin was an animal lover who enjoyed trips to many zoos, Sea World and Gatorland as a kid where he would spend hours watching elephants, rhinos, manatees, and alligators—to name a few of his favorites. And he could always be counted on to show your dog or cat some love anytime he was around them—especially his sister’s dog, Fry.
Kevin also loved the ocean and the beach. He spent many happy vacations on beaches across Florida, but Kevin especially loved the clear blue waters, powdery sand and peaceful vibes of Navarre Beach.
Most of all, Kevin loved sports. He played many sports growing up and was ultimately named an all-state football player at Dowling Catholic in 2008.
As an adult Kevin became a walking sports encyclopedia. He prided himself on knowing more about college football than anyone. And he wasn’t far off.
More than anything, though, his true sports passion was the Florida Gators. It began at age 5 or 6 when Kevin was awed by watching a football team with an alligator mascot and his passion for the Gators never waned. Kevin travelled extensively to attend Gators’ football, basketball and baseball games in Florida and across the country. Nothing made Kevin happier than being in Gainesville, Florida on a football Saturday at The Swamp. The pure joy he experienced on those days was contagious and led to Kevin creating a legion of Gator fans in his wake.
Kevin is survived by his mother, Mary Clare Cox (Nate) of Polk City; his father Ted Mercer (Michelle) of Tiffin; his sister Meaghan Coleman (Brooks) & niece Blake Coleman of Greensboro, North Carolina; his brother Max Mercer of Coralville; his grandparents, John and Mary Kay LaBonia of Des Moines; his aunt Maureen Schaefer (Dan) of Des Moines; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was also survived by many, many friends—especially lifelong friends Colin and Anthony as well as his best friend in Gainesville, Hillary.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bob and Eva Mercer, his uncle, Ed Boesen, and his aunt, Alice Benge.
A private family service was held on April 24. Kevin’s ashes will spend eternity relaxing in the gentle waves of Navarre Beach, Florida and rooting for the Gators at The Swamp in Gainesville.
In lieu of flowers, please keep Kevin in your heart and if you are so moved, make a donation in Kevin’s name to an animal charity that is important to you.
Go Gators!Â
