Kenneth "Ken" Butters, 80, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2026.
Born on June 25, 1945, in Oelwein, Iowa, Ken grew up in Fayette, the oldest of 4 children. He spent his entire childhood playing basketball, football, horseback riding and tobogganing. Ken lived a life defined by dedication to his family and excellence in his profession. His strong faith in Jesus Christ allowed Ken to face the end of his earthly journey with peace and confidence, ready to be received by his Lord and Savior.
Ken graduated in the top ten of his class from the University of Iowa College of Law. He went on to enjoy a distinguished legal career, practicing law for over 50 years. He was known for his brilliant legal mind, integrity, and commitment to his clients.
Above all else, Ken's greatest passion was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mona Butters; his children, Stephen (Kyrene) Butters, Mark Holte (Teagan & Brady), David (Candace) Holte (Mavi & Malia), and Stephen Holte. He is also survived by his siblings, Tom Butters, Steve (Pauline) Butters, Mary Peyres and his faithful dog ZARA.
Ken was an avid golfer, golfing on 5 of the 7 continents. He and Mona enjoyed traveling the world together, as well as their annual vacation to Cabo. Kenny always carried his bible in his carry on bag. A friend told Mona he saw a well-worn bible on a pew one day and couldn’t wait to see who it belonged to. It was Kenny’s.
He was a Hawkeye fan through and through, loved football, basketball and backgammon. He and Mona began playing competitive backgammon during Covid and kept a running score of who won. Sunday night before he passed, they were tied 2340-2340. He carried this competitive spirit into all aspects of his life and loved a challenge. He could tell a story about anything, captivating his audience with his humor and wit. He found joy in relaxing on the deck, listening to music, and spending time with those he loved. When asked what brought him the greatest joy, his answer was always the same: his grandchildren.
Ken will be remembered for his quick-witted sense of humor. He loved to laugh and had a way of making every gathering more fun. With his playful spirit he was often described as a big kid at heart, bringing smiles and laughter to family and friends throughout his life.
Kenny will be deeply missed by all who knew him and fondly remembered for the countless lives he touched.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Blessman International or Reach Church.
