Karen Louise (Mathis) Ethington

Karen Louise Ethington, 86, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2025. Born on September 2, 1939, in Diagonal, Iowa, Karen spent most of her life on the east side of Des Moines, where she built a life filled with love, laughter, and family.


Karen worked for many years starting at Iowa-Des Moines National Bank, then Norwest Bank and Wells Fargo, where she was known for her dedication, kindness, and hard work. She married the love of her life, Jack Ethington, and together they raised two sons, Randall and Jeffrey Ethington, who were her pride and joy.


Karen was an avid reader who loved a good mystery or crime show. She was also a lifelong Elvis Presley fan, and her family fondly remembers how much she enjoyed listening to his music. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, Roxanna (Jon) Bailey, Anna (Patrick) Murphy, Jacob Ethington, Zach Ethington, as well as her great-grandchildren, Kelsey Cross and Laurence “Ollie” Murphy, and great-great grandson Jaxson Cross.


Some of Karen’s favorite pastimes included shopping and visiting the casino with her best friend, Donna, who remained a cherished companion throughout her life.


Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth Kessler and Roy Mathis; her infant sister Charlene; her brothers, Billy and Bob Mathis; and her husband, Jack Ethington.


She is survived by her sons, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, her brother Jack Mathis, best friend Donna, and many cousins and friends who will miss her dearly.


Karen will be remembered for her warmth, humor, strength, and the deep love she had for her family. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
