Joshua Lee Seymour, 47, of Grimes, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 16, 2026, at the Kavanaugh Hospice House in Des Moines, Iowa, surrounded by love.

Josh was born on April 12, 1979, in Visalia, California, to Jacquelynn Lee Seymour (Terry) and Thomas Stevens Sowers Sr. (Juli). He was a man with a generous heart and hands that were always busy, whether he was fixing something broken, fishing, or chasing his kids around the apartment.

In everything he did, Josh brought energy, laughter, and deep loyalty to the people he loved. A testament to his character shined through the many people who came to visit him in his last days. One young man he had worked with told us his story. He was having a rough time. Josh invited him to go fishing and they began to fish together frequently. He said that invitation from Josh and the friendship that followed saved his life.

A devoted father, grandfather, husband, and brother, Josh lived for his family. His children and grandchildren were the light of his life, and he had a gift for showing up for the people he loved. He was also a great uncle to his niece Zoe.

Those who knew Josh will remember him for his strength, his heart, his stubborn spirit, and the incredible love he gave to everyone around him.

In 2024, Josh landed his dream job at Unity Point Healthcare in Des Moines, Iowa as a Facility Technician. He would regularly talk your ear off about his co-workers, the work, and the machines he got to fix.

He learned how to fix things from his dad, brothers, and his coworkers. He once said, “It’s my obsession to fix everything and help people, it is God’s work.” His hobbies were many: video gaming, fishing, camping, mushroom hunting, paintball, and rollerblading all had a place in his life.

Josh  is survived by his beloved wife, Penny Seymour; his daughters, Avanelle Seymour and Madalynn Seymour; his stepson, Mason (Dory) Goodson; his grandchildren, Leah Goodson and Joey Goodson;  his brothers, Levi (Christina) Sowers, Tommy Sowers, and John (Karen) Degler, his mother Jacquelynn Lee Seymour, his father, Thomas Sowers and his step-mother Juli Probasco-Sowers.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, June and Henry Dykstra, and his uncles, John Sowers and Jimmy Probasco.

We are grateful for every moment shared with him and the moments that will live on forever.
