James “Jim” Hibbs, 83, of Des Moines, died on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at the Veterans Community Living Center hospice unit surrounded by family after a brief illness.
His family includes his three daughters, Lorrie Fortune, Vickie (Steve) Lynch, and Jamie (Jim) Rykhus all of Des Moines; six grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. He is also survived by his first wife and mother of his children, Karen Baase.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Neola Hibbs; wife, Edith; and great granddaughter, Samara Miller.
Jim was born February 4, 1942, in Chariton, Iowa. He graduated from Des Moines Technical High School, and after graduation he joined the Army where he was stationed at Fort Huachuca, AZ. Jim retired from Firestone where he worked for most of his career. After retirement he worked part-time at Wal-Mart in Ankeny, Iowa. He enjoyed playing cards, square dancing, gardening, watching old westerns, WWE, and NASCAR.
Interment will take place at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Adel, Iowa with a military send-off planned for this spring.
