Harold Benton Millard

Harold Benton Millard, age 98, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2026. Harold was born on June 22, 1927, and lived a long life filled with kindness, faith, family, and service to others.

Harold was a gentle and caring man who touched many lives through his warm heart and positive spirit. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.


He is survived by his daughter, Linda Murphy; son-in-law Tom Murphy; daughter Lori Gavin; and son-in-law Scott Gavin. He also leaves behind five grandchildren: Diane Murphy Smith of Sioux City, Iowa; Denise Murphy of Des Moines, Iowa; Tommy Murphy of Des Moines, Iowa; Mikayla (Gavin) Knipe of Omaha, Nebraska; and Max Gavin of Omaha, Nebraska.

Harold was blessed with several great-grandchildren, including Thomas Smith of Sioux City, Iowa; Benton and Kalina Knipe of Omaha, Nebraska; Bodhi and Nora Murphy of Des Moines, Iowa; and Tate Gavin of Omaha, Nebraska.


He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lois Millard; his brother, Morris Millard; and his sisters, Wanda Jennings and Barbara Tew.


Harold proudly served his country during World War II and remained dedicated to his community throughout his life. He was a Past Master of Moingona Lodge No. 335 in Des Moines and a dual member of Gnemeth Lodge No. 577 in West Des Moines.


The family extends heartfelt thanks to the hospice caregivers, especially Selena and Lisa, for their compassionate care and support. Special thanks are also given to Dianna, Cathy and the many friends, caregivers, therapists, musicians, and Pastor Andrea who brought comfort, companionship, and joy to Harold during his final days.


Memorial contributions may be made to West Des Moines United Methodist Church.


A visitation will be held at West Des Moines United Methodist Church (720 Grand Ave, West Des Moines, IA  50265) on June 24, 2026, at 9:30 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. and lunch at 11:30 a.m. Military honors and interment will take place at Iowa Veterans Cemetery on June 25, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.


Harold's legacy of kindness, faith, and love for family will be remembered always.
