Gerald M Sonntag, 86, of Des Moines, died on Saturday, July 15, 2023, under hospice care at Valley View Village. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, July 22, 2023, at St Joseph Catholic Church.
Gerald is survived by 7 children Judy (Michael) Sauer, Jerry (Kathy) Sonntag, Jim (Mona) Sonntag, Joe (Terrie) Sonntag, Duane (Kelly) Sonntag, Dan Sonntag, Rob (Kelli) Sonntag, and sons-in-law Pat Wilson and Pete Fix; 17 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.
Gerald is preceded in death by his wife Theresa, his daughters Patty Wilson and Betty Fix and daughter-in-law Kathy Sonntag.
Gerald was a proud member of the 82nd Airborne with 12 jumps during his two years of service. Over the years he worked for Green Bay Lumberyard, Guys Foods, Cappel’s Ace Hardware and Aiken Building Center. He was married to Theresa for 59 years. He enjoyed working , gardening, traveling and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Gerald and Theresa welcomed into their home three foreign exchange students, Thierry Gueguen, Pierre Gueguen and Richard Connell. After living in Atlantic for many years, Theresa and Jerry moved to Des Moines 17 years ago to be closer to family.
