Douglas Antonio Van Norden, 76, of Pleasant Hill, Iowa passed away January 8, 2022.

Douglas was born April 11, 1945 to his parents Paul and Wilma (Epps) Van Norden in Porchester, New York.

Douglas and Marty became best friends during young adulthood. They each went their own way. Douglas went on to graduate from Ellsworth Community College where he played football. He worked for a time at Swift meat packing plant. His passion was found as he became the Associate Director and Board Member at Churches United Shelter. He was there at the inception and would eventually retire. While working at Churches United Shelter, he received the South Central Community Service Award from former Governor Chet Culver.

Doug and Marty were reunited years later. Doug knew this time he was not letting her get away, Marty felt the same. They were married March of 1996.

Doug – affectionately known as Papa – and Marty enjoyed all sports, cooking, music, and family. Papa was known for “dipping”, or listening in on conversations of others. It became a family joke.

Papa and Marty loved spending time with their many grandchildren. They would often have football pools with the grandkids.

Douglas was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Wilma; his sister, Penny; and his brothers Paul, Dickie, Corky and Howard.

Left to carry on his memory are children, Mike and Caly; grandchildren Josh, Heather, Austin, Bella, Tyler, Timmy, John and Harry; great granddaughter Gracie Lee and siblings Albert, Carol, Wilma, Barbra and Essie. As well as many nieces and nephews.
