Donald John Schnurr was born March 25, 1930 in Granville, Iowa. Don was the 6th child to Emma (Nichel) and Herman Schnurr. He helped on the family farm after completing the 8th grade and was drafted into the United States Army January 30, 1952. He served as a radio operator within 45th Infantry Division in Korea until October 29, 1953. Don was husband to the late Millie Schnurr (Penning) whom he met at a friends wedding and married on May 25, 1955 in Ashton, Iowa. Millie and Don enjoyed 56 years of marriage. Don passed away on July 13 at Mercy Hospice after a prolonged illness, and is survived by children, Douglas (Claire) of Chaska, Minnesota; Robert (Anne) of Granger, Iowa; Gary of Des Moines, Iowa; Julie (Michael) Harris of Richardson, Texas; Thomas (Patricia) of Stevensville, Michigan; Michael (Renee) of Roland, Iowa; 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Don was very proud of his combat service in Korea. He enjoyed fixing lawn mowers and evenings on the front porch.

Private services will be held at the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery attended only by immediate family. We would like to thank the VA Hospital of Des Moines for their great care of Don, as well as Everystep and HomeInstead for their excellent home based care and dedication to keeping Don healthy in the home he loved. Finally, thank you to Mercy Hospice for their loving end-of-life care. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your local hospice.
