Donald Gonnerman

Donald Gonnerman, 76, Waukee, passed peacefully Friday evening, May 12, surrounded by family. Donald was born in Fair Grove, Missouri, to Dr. Wayne and Nora Gonnerman. A graduate of Missouri State and the University of Missouri, he earned his B.A., M.B.A., C.P.A., J.D., L.L.M., and Ph.D. (ABD.) His career began as a professor for UW-Platteville and Drake University. Donald later became a senior partner at the Davis Grace law firm in Des Moines. Donald spoke French fluently, was an expert on the Civil War and Mark Twain, and had an educated opinion on nearly everything. A voracious reader, he had library cards at all the local libraries. Skilled in woodworking, home remodeling and auto mechanics, he taught his children many practical skills. Donald spent his retirement enjoying all three skillsets with his son Benjamin. Surviving are his children, Benjamin (Ann) and Julie Gonnerman, two grandsons, Beau and Teddy, as well as his former spouse, Marilyn Mueller. Also surviving are brother Dr. Wayne (Cathie) Gonnerman, of Boston, MA, sister Kay (Dr. Stan) Sides of Cape Girardeau, MO, and multiple nieces and nephews. Beau and Teddy were the light in Donald’s later life. Memorial contributions may be made to the West Des Moines Public Library or the American Alzheimer’s Association. A private celebration of life is planned for Aug. 5.
