Cheri Lyn Downey



Cheri Lyn Downey was born on November 10, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois to Allen W. Downey and Louise (Clark) Downey. Cheri transitioned from her labor to reward on Sunday, December 12, 2021, at Methodist Hospital surrounded by her family.


Cheri was educated through the Glynn County School District in Brunswick, Georgia. She graduated from Glynn Academy High School in 1973. After graduation she moved to Des Moines, IA. She was recently retired from the State of Iowa after 25 years of service.


She had a fun, loving spirit. She made friends everywhere she went. From her infectious laugh and upbeat personality, Cheri was the life of the party. She was an extremely considerate and kind woman. She believed in God and was a member of the Bethel AME Church-Des Moines where she sang in the choir.


Cheri had a love for life. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, gardening, dining out, traveling, and watching professional football; her favorite team was the Minnesota Vikings. She loved spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren. She also loved her dog Suggie.


Cheri was preceded in death by her mother; Louise (Clarke) Downey, stepmother; Ann Downey, grandparents; Samuel Leslie and Beulah Downey, Aaron and Willie Mae Clarke, her sister; Marie Lynn Fisher and her life partner; Toni Hammond.


She leaves to cherish her memory, her son; Christopher Downey Sr., grandchildren; Christiana and Christopher Jr. Downey, her father; Allen W. (Ruth) Downey Sr., sisters; Roberta Robinson, Ursula Gore, brothers; Angelo Bunch, Robert Lee Jr., Allen W. (Kim) Downey Jr., brother-in-law; John Fisher, nieces and nephews; Stephanie Jones, Anthony Fisher, Tanisha McGuire, Rene Bulger, Dawn Parcel, Robert White, Courtney Downey, Gail Downey, Jacob Downey, Julie Hatlass, John Fisher, Wanda Carter, Clifford Fisher, Terry Fisher, Deanna Richardson; as well as a host of other family members and special friends in Minneapolis and Des Moines.


The family of Cheri Downey would like to thank everyone for the love and support shown to us during the loss of our loved one. She will truly be missed.
