Brian Jason Mackan, 43, passed away on March 12, 2026, at his residence in Ft. Madison, Iowa. He was born on October 23, 1982, in Red Bank, New Jersey, while his father was stationed at Fort Monmouth.
Brian lived in various nearby towns in Washington and while working as a guard at Fort Lewis, Washington, he was selected to attend the Department of Defense Police Academy at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, where he excelled both academically and physically. He took great pride in his work and his accomplishments at duty stations including Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and the Iowa Army Ammunition plant, earning numerous awards and recognition for his exemplary service. Brian enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping and hunting, and had a passion for his ham radio. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family.
He is survived by his six dearly loved children in Kansas and Iowa; his heartbroken mother; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins in the western Washington State area. He was preceded in death by his father, Bernard J. Mackan, on January 13, 2006, and his maternal grandmother, Anita Jacobsen Angle.
Per his request, no funeral services will be held. Memorials in his honor are being planned in Iowa and western Washington State. Brian will be greatly missed, especially by his grieving mother and all who knew and loved him.
