Barbara Strako

Updated: Dec 28, 2023

Barbara Jean (Mahoney) Strako passed away peacefully on Nov 27, 2023, at the age of 82. Born on May 16, 1941, she was lovingly and faithfully wed to Joseph C. Strako for nearly 60 years prior to his passing in 2019.

The mother of six children and grandmother of nine, she devoted her life to all of them and their activities. Her first impulse was always toward kindness, giving, and putting others first. It was these characteristics that made her a beloved Mom, Grandma, Sister, and Friend.

If you knew her at all, chances are you received a greeting card with a sincere, personal sentiment written in delicate penmanship. She kept hundreds of cards on file so she would be sure to have just the “right one” for the occasion and the person. Her adoring grandkids could always count on a crisp $2 bill tucked inside.

Throughout her life she remained devoted to her “Irish Twin” sister, Judy Rubis (Pete) of St. Louis, MO, sister-in-law, Sue Page of Westville, IL, and many extended family members. She was blessed with meaningful friendships along her journey. Our family extends heartfelt gratitude for the laughs, memories, and wonderful experiences she enjoyed throughout her life.

Barbara is survived by, Joseph T. Strako (Rosann) and Joseph; Jay Strako; Kelli Smith (Trent) and Sierra Marquardt (Kane) and soon-to-arrive great grandson, Shae Thomsen (Abigail) and Jared; Robin Heimann (Bill), Kayla Coy (Bradley) and Bryce and Bailey; Jon Strako (Jenny) and Noah, Luke, and Olivia. Preceded in death by “The Big Guy” and love of her life, her parents, and brother-in-law Jerry Page.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions be sent to the Bishop Drumm Retirement Center, 5815 Winwood Dr., Johnston, IA 50131. Please indicate your gift is made in memory of Barb Strako to benefit Martina Place Assisted Living. A celebration of life is scheduled for December 16 at 10am, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in West Des Moines, Iowa.
