Raymond Henry Bendig was born to Paul and Vera (Ott) Bendig on August 15, 1936 in Boyd County, Nebraska. He peacefully passed away in his recliner chair on April 23, 2021 at MorningStar Assisted Living Center in Des Moines, Iowa at age 84, following a hearty breakfast and a lighthearted jig with a favorite staff member.
After growing up on the childhood farm, he served in the U.S. Air Force, later joined the U.S. Postal Service, then spent much of the next 50 years as an electrician in Des Moines.
In his more active days, Ray enjoyed playing horseshoes, golfing, and square dancing. He was an avid camper and appreciated for his hallmark biscuit and gravy breakfasts. He was also fond of gardening and working puzzles, and especially relished making people smile. He was a cheerful, warm person who made friends easily.
He suffered a serious stoke in early 2018. And through perseverance and support from family and friends, he regained his mobility, and characteristic playful humor. He was ever grateful for visitors, as well as the many cards, letters, and photos shared, keeping then on his desk and on his iPad.
Ray is survived by son, Jeff, and daughter, Lesley. He is also survived by five sisters: Ethel Stahlecker, Loraine Woehl (Robert), Margaret Heien (David), Florence/Betsy Rogero (William), and Alma Tiernan (Richard). He was preceded in death by his parents and seven brothers. He was actively in touch with his extended family and was particularly beloved by Robert and Roger and Darold and Jason Bendig. He had several cherished friends in Iowa and Nebraska with whom he remained in close touch.
The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to all of those who have extended their kindness to this dear man over the years.
Ray's committal service with Honors will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 11, 2021 at the Iowa Veteran Cemetery.
