Marilyn Stokes

Marilyn Louise (Maddy) Stokes died on June 17, 2021, in Des Moines. She was born on December 16, 1934, in Attica, Iowa to Merle and Laverne Maddy. She graduated from Attica High School in 1953 and married Robert (Bob) J. Stokes on July 19, 1953. She is survived by three children Craig (Laura), Robin Spaulding (Douglas) and Kelly (Rick McAtee), three grandchildren, Trevor and Maddy Stokes and Shelby Spaulding, and a sister, JoAnn Massick (Irvin). She was predeceased by Bob, her parents and a brother who died in infancy, James Franklin Maddy.

Marilyn and Bob started their marriage away from Des Moines but settled in the city in 1956 where they both lived until their deaths. Marilyn and Bob were Iowa Hawkeye football season ticket holders until health issues made trips to Kinnick and away destinations impossible. She and Bob enjoyed travel with their children and grandchildren to Alaska, other parts of the US and Europe. Marilyn was a high school basketball player and team mother to several softball teams on which her daughters played.

Upon the death of Bob in 2017, Marilyn was a resident of Edencrest Beaverdale until her death. The family will have a private interment.

The family thanks the compassionate individuals that helped our mother through her final years and days, including the St. Croix Hospice care team and the staff at Edencrest at Beaverdale. We cannot fully express our gratitude for all they have done and continue to do.
